Not knowing what to do with the monster, after they had slain him, one of the party .tied the dead snake to the tail of a harmless, inno cent cow who has a musical little bell at tached to her neck. The cow went scampering through the woods kicking with all her might arad main while the music of the little bell could be heard through' the forest glades for a few miles around, almost. It was cruel sport on the part of the young men who enjoyed te frolic, but the moral of the tale is, keep your cows ia your own private lots, and then they will be free from hrm. Rocking a Train. Late yesterday evening, as the regu lar Southern bound passenger train on the W. A W. Railroad rolled up and stopped at Faison's Depot, seme 60 miles from this city, a colored boy about ten or twelve years of age was seen to throw a rock, which went crashing threugh a window of the private car of President Bridgers, where Mr. Bridgers and his wife, who were returning from a trip North, were seated at the time. The little racal was seen aad recognized, but made his escape through a cotton field. The train shortly cfter wards staited, but before it had proceeded more than two miles on its journey to this city, President Bridgers ordered the conductor to stop the train and back it to Faisen's Depot. Upon the return to the depot, Col. B. ordered the arrest of the offender, and left Captain Barry, Road Master, at Faison's, to see that the arrest was accomplished, and also to see that the parent of the boy punishes him severely, otherwise the President assert ed that he would carry the matter to Court. We are glad Col. Bridgers has acted thus promptly in the matter, but we think had the offender been littlo olUr it would have served as a good example to have left him hanging along the road side to dry in the sun. Any person who will endanger the lives of the innocent passengers on a railroad train by placing obstructions on the track or throwing stones or rocks through a car window deserves summary punishaent of the se verest kind. We trust the exanple of the speedy punishment of the little scoundrel at Faison's will have a wholesome effect upon wrong doers of that description and character in the future. A Wild Horso and a Step Ladder. One of our very good friends who car; ries considerable of the "aldermanic pro portions" of old, and who now measures 48 inches around the waist, has been imagining himself to be falling off and rapidly going into a decline for some time past. In order to check the imagi nary savage inroads into his health he purchased a horse and saddle and deter mined to indulge in the manly sport of polo, steeple chasing and a dash after Reynard. Yesterday morning he put the saddle and bridle on the fiery and un tamed steed and tried to mount. One of his very intimate friends stood by to see him off and assisted him to get his foot in the stirrup but when the weight of the "aldermanic proportions" of old was borne'down on the stirrup the saddle slip ped and the Bery and untamed was put back in the stable. This morning an eight foot step ladder was brought into requisition in getting on the steed. Our friend in his haste put the wrong foot in the stirrup and gave a mirabie spring which threw him over the horse to the ground. II is foot wa3 caught in the stirrup and the horse went off, dragging our friend after him. Forte. nately the girth broke and let him out oi his perilous position. During the high and lofty vaulting of our friend his right foot became entangled in the step ladder, which as he went over the horse, describ' ed circles and semi-circles, obtuse, ob liques and right angles, and tangents which intersected each other in so many places as to require the united efforts for thirty days of three martheraaticians and two astronomers to draw them out. This morning a placard was posted up in his place of business bearing this inscrip tion, "A wild horse and an eight foot step ladder for sale." - - Many lose their beauty from the hair falling or fading. Parker's Hair Bal sam supplies necessary nourishment, pre vents falling and grayness and is an ele jjaat drcssicj. " . ' notaries Public, Notaries Pablic are renewing their commissions as required by the act pass ed at the last General Assembly. Mr. A. S. Heide had his renewed on the 11th of April and so far as we can learn his was the first commission issued to a No tary Pablic under the new law. Mr. W.L. Ssaith, Jr., renewed a diy or two ago. -1 - krop Ice. A new ice house is to be established in this city and will be run by Messrs W. E. Davis & Son We understand that these gentlemen propose to sell their ice at half a cent a pound. A cargo is now i the way and another has been ordered which will arrive in about three weeks. This reduction in the price of ice will be hailed with joy by many of our. citi zens. An important Decision. Treasurer Worth has just rendered the following decision, which is of interest to the sheriffs in the State: Since the ratifi cation of the present machinery act, March 11, 1881, land sold for taxes and bid in by the sheriff must be bid in for the county, and not for the State, as formerly. The committee which perfec ted the present revenue act no doubt deemed this a change for the better, as did also the Legislature which passed it- Rare Opportunity. Messrs. Heide k Co. have received an invoice of all linen shirts and linen mos quito netting on consignment from Bel fast, Ireland. The shirts are all pure fine Irish linen and are being sold at less than the actual cost to close out the con signment. Those of our citizens who wish a good linen shirt at the -cost of a cotton one would do well to examine them.' Smart, Eli? A smart Alec, cne of your knowing Johns, in reply to our inquiry, "how are fish biting at the rocks" said "they "want biting at the rocks at all, but were bjting preity well at the bait nnd fiddlers were generally used." As he made the re mark he scanned us over from head to foot and suggested that we would make good bait. Smart, ehl We waited for him to whistle so we could seo where the joke came in.. -- - - - Golden Hair and T&ree Bears The diagram for the sale of reserred seats to the charming opera of Golden Hair and Three Bears was put on sale at Heinsberger's this morning. There was quite a rush for seats but some few choice ones can still be had. The little fellow who is to take the part of Little Cub i3 expected to arrive from Oolds- boro this evening. He has played the character several times and has always received the highest encomiums. The opera is said to be of rare excellence and will be put on the stage with Professor Chase's usual good taste and discern ment. The Cheraw and Chester B B A correspondent of the Review, wri ting us from Lancaster, S. C, in response to an editorial article published one day last week, relative to the Cheraw k Chester Narrow Gauge R. R , tells us that it is true that the Richmond k Danville Syndicate have bought a con trolling intarest in the C. & C. N. O. R. R. This 'road ia in running order now from Chester to Lancaster. An injunc tion has been issaed, restraining the Di rectors from placing a second nortgage on the road to the amount of $50,000, which amount was to have been furnish ed by the R. k D. Syndicate, to build a bridge across the Catawba river, provided the said R. & D. people were allowed to control a majority of the stock. The stock was bought from holders at 50 cents per share by the President of the roail and hen resold to the Richmond k Danville authorities. The purchase f this road, our correspondent thinks, will effect the operations of the Carolina CtntraL District Conferences.
